To understand the Dan Patch phenomenon, you have to appreciate the popularity of harness racing in turn-of-the-century America, including Indiana. Dan Patch was born in 1896, when horses were still a primary means of transportation; at the time of his death in 1916, horseless carriages called automobiles were fast making horses obsolete as a passenger conveyance. During Dan Patch’s lifetime, harness racing was immensely popular, especially in rural America. County fairs across America staged races, which were attended by tens of thousands. One appearance in Muncie toward the end of Dan Patch’s career drew a reported 20,000 spectators, at a time when Muncie’s population was less than 23,000 total. It was into this pre-automotive America that Dan Patch was born in Oxford â€" conceived for a $150 stud fee. The horse at birth did not look at all like a winner. His ankles were very crooked; at first he needed help from a trainer just to stand, and he developed a wildly flailing gait. Some neighbors even suggested “putting him down.” But his original owners saw something in Dan Patch. They worked with him slowly, and he eventually started racing at the age of 4. He immediately outclassed the competition. He never lost a race. In fact, other owners quit running their horses against him, so his owners switched him to racing exhibitions against the clock. Marketing magic â€" decades ahead of its time The Dan Patch legend began to transcend sports when he was purchased by Marion Savage. Savage owned a large livestock feed manufacturing company. Savage had failed in farming and farm-related companies until starting the International Stock Food Company and building it into the largest company of its kind. Along the way he developed a reputation as a marketing genius. Just like Dan Patch, he started poorly but now found his stride. Dan Patch set records on the track that stood for decades. His reputation went global in 1906 when he broke the world record with an unofficial one-mile pace of 1:55. Savage found any number of creative ways to exploit the horse’s popularity. He developed creative contracts to garner gate proceeds at country fairs where the horse appeared, and he promoted these appearances relentlessly. The horse earned thousands more for Savage in stud fees. In addition to using Dan patch’s image to “endorse” his own company, Savage licensed the Dan Patch likeness to other companies. Products ranging from cigars to soft drinks, baking soda, toys, lineament, stoves, clocks, thermometers, watches, sleds, cutlery, china, stoves and washing machines all sported the Dan Patch name or picture. There was even a Dan Patch Automobile. As “spokesman” for Savage’s feed company, the Dan Patch legend was used to suggest performance-enhancing benefits from using International Stock Food products. The company produced pamphlets promoting the farm where Dan Patch lived and sent them to customers. The publications were filled with the exploits of Dan Patch â€" and ads for International Stock products. As Dan Patch provided riches for Savage, the owner treated his horse like royalty, with his own private railway car and a barn so luxurious it was called the “Taj Mahal.” Dan Patch and Marion Savage died just days apart in July 1916. Rich celebrities are accustomed to being gifted with expensive jewelry, and the trend extends to the day they give birth. Case in point: Pierce Brosnan gave wife Keely three gold and diamond bracelets when their son Paris was born. Ben Affleck presented wife Jennifer Garner with pricey purple jewelry after she delivered daughter Violet (which the unfussy and practical Mrs. Affleck reportedly made him return). Sarah Jessica Parker got a gorgeous charm bracelet from hubby Matthew Broderick when son James made his debut. Other celeb dads celebrate the arrival of their new babies by buying their wives and girlfriends expensive bling such as diamond rings, diamond earrings, pearl necklaces, pearl earrings, and jewelry made with their baby’s birthstone. Up until a few years ago, these “push presents,”â€"so named because they’re tokens of appreciation for laborâ€"were news to me. All I got when I delivered my son was…my son. The last was a Kate Spade diaper bag.” From Wayne, father of four: “Maybe for one or two, certainly not all four.” [I certainly remember: Wayne’s wife, my friend Sandy, was the recipient of the highly coveted and aforementioned sapphire and diamond earrings.] From Howie: “Considering my wife had a C-section with both girls, is there a cut present?” [Actually, there is, and it’s called a ‘cut your guts out’ present. My friend’s daughter Nicole got a sterling silver bracelet from her husband for her efforts]. “I gave my wife a birthstone for each girl, but forget the ‘push present’ idea. Those nine months are the easy part. It’s for the 18 years afterwards that you have to give your wife the gifts! Honestly, those two girls can scream!” Dennis: “Funny, before my wife was pregnant I never head of a push present. My buddy and his wife had a baby four months before us and his wife was sure to tell my wife about this gift thing. It’s not that I wouldn’t have gotten my wife and mother of my son a great gift, but it was put into the realm of ‘did your husband get you a diamond bracelet?’ type thing. It goes to show that keeping up with the Joneses makes some folks do things they might not otherwise do.” [OK, maybe this answer doesn’t technically fall under the sweet category as it’s got some ambivalence tossed in.] “Not sure spending thousands on a gift is the best thing for the new family. Was this gift idea created by the diamond companies? So, yes, I did get my wife a gift. Before I’d even heard of a push present, I had my son’s birthstone set in a ring and necklace.” From Paul: “I gave her a day at the spa.” From Derek, “I gave her a Tiffany ring because it was a nice thing to do, I’d heard, and because she deserves it.” Now, for the incensed: From Ben: “No, I didn’t get my wife a push gift. The only thing on my mind was making sure all the important stuff was taken care of. To add something so stupid on top of this earth-shattering event is ridiculous. The special gift is the gift of life and the creation of a human being. Now when I look back at those times I wouldn’t’ even recall the insignificant gift. Sounds like some baloney cooked up by a jewelers’ association.” From Steve: “I agreed to fund the kids for 22 years each. That was my gift.” Peter L: “Not a big fan of the push present. A woman gives birth to a child and now she expects a gift??? While I have absolutely no idea what it’s like to be pregnant, I don’t know of any woman who has regretted it. I had a pair of cheap £9.99 pink straightners when straightners first began to come into the shops I thought they were fantastic in my favourite colour too, but then I tried my friends and hers worked so much better so I decided to go and buy a new paid I believe were Babyliss they were a little better but had thinner plates so it was taking me even longer to do my hair as mine is quite thick and long then I bought a pair of cheap Remington ones but they weren t very good never actually straightened my hair. A few months after that, after visiting a salon and having my hair coloured blonde and pink and having it all layered they straightened it once it was complete and it looked fab it really did, the straightners got hot really quickly nothing liked the ones I had at home 20minutes before I wanted to use them I would have to put them on. So I found the price out of these ones they were £60.00 - I thought this was very expensive as I was only on £300.00 a month but I decided to save my money up the next month and I bought a pair that was 5 years ago and they still work they are Futura and I would recommend them to anyone with thicker and longer hair. I ve never had any problems with them, so overall those have been a very good investment. I have now decided I want a new pair, ones with slimmer plates so I can use them to curl my hair too. IM hoping I might get the Mark Hill ones with the pink plates love them there around £100.00 I m hoping there worth it, until you ve tried them you don t know. There are so many different makes of hair straightners out there so which ones to choose is the question!!! Over 40 and Fabulous

Women over 40 don’t have sex, they don’t date and they don’t get married. They do become grandmas, bake cookies all day and give out hugs and don’t understand dating, fashion, and flirting and certainly don’t want to do any of that for themselves. Okay, so those are pretty outdated stereotypes. But isn’t that what a lot of us thought growing up? And, isn’t there some part of your brain that still believes a small part of that or something similar? That a 25-year-old woman isn’t going to have anything in common with a 70-year-old woman? Right? Wrong. Or so I discovered when I was in my twenties, that women in their seventies, for example, were just as concerned with fashion, romantic relationships and their looks. That maybe they hadn’t really changed all that much on the inside, even if the outside belied that thought. “Oh yea,” you say, “I know all about that. The widowed lady on our street has been seen in the company of men having coffee down at the town bakery.” That conjures up a certain image, doesn’t it? Gray hair wrapped in a bun, granny glasses, an old housedress, sensible shoes. But what if she had touched-up blonde hair spiked in a short, trendy style with a celebrity brand of sunglasses, was wearing fashionable hip hugging capri pants with a midriff top? What would you think of her now? Would she inspire you to be the best you can be at any age or would you think she was dressing too young? What about the woman in-between? Maybe she’s not frumpy but not stylishly young either. After being widowed or divorced for a couple of years, what if she were to begin datingâ€"not just one man but maybe two? What if she were your mother? Your sister? Your aunt? Or what about all the women who never married? Where do you put them? I love fiction that you can learn from. Where characters have to look inside themselves, face the unpleasant parts about themselves or others but come out stronger. Or have interesting insights. Like the character, MJ, in Old Boyfriends by Rexanne Becnel, People categorize you so that they can dismiss you. How true. I dislike categories, boundaries, boxesâ€"in music, books, movies and especially boundaries around age and who and what we are as women. That s why I m writing Women s Fiction with Attitude â€"fiction for and about women who defy simple descriptions. So what kind of woman do you want to be when you grow up? Libby Gill of Traveling Hopefully says to imagine the type of woman you want to be when you re old. And then one day, when you look in the mirror, you will see her. I know the kind of woman I want to be when I grow up because I’ve seen her. She’s got attitude, she’s got spunk, she’s got enthusiasm for life. She’s found her callingâ€"and it’s probably more along the lines of scaling the highest peaks, deep-sea diving, or traveling the world, rather than baking cookies, baby-sitting grandkids and gardening. Maybe she has kids and grandkids but you wouldn t know it because her life is not defined by them. She can express that side of her but there s so much more to her. She’s taking that job transfer to Texas and learning how to 2-step or she’s gone off to Paris, Australia,or Hong Kong by herself or with some old friends. Or maybe she’s gone off with somebody new in Las Vegas, London or Montreal. If she s afraid, you wouldn t know that either because she doesn t let fear stop her from taking that risk, to dare to be who she really is. Because the woman I ve seen dares to live. And it doesn t hurt to have a little attitude. A little motto. Like what s inscribed on my coffee cup, It s Hard To Be Humble When You re Fabulous!
